Biography:

Ary Jean Léon Bitter 1883/1973

Bitter, born in Marseille on May 29, 1883 and died in Paris on June 14, 1973, was a French sculptor.

In 1895, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Marseille directed by Antoine Dominique MAGAUD and then Alphonse MOUTTE in 1896. Sculpture classes were taught by Emile ALDEBERT.

Member of the Société des artistes français, pupil of Jules Coutan, Ary Bitter won a silver medal at the 1921 Salon des artistes français, then the gold medal in 1924 before being placed hors-concours.

He was commissioned to create monumental sculptures such as

1914: the monumental sculpture for the food pavilion at the Swiss National Exhibition in Bern.

In 1921, he created the monument to the dead at Sanary-sur-Mer (stone and bronze).

As well as the monuments to the dead at Saint-Jérôme (bronze) and Saint-Louis (stone) cemeteries in Marseille.

In 1925, Ary Bitter exhibited alongside Paul Sylvestre, Maximilien Fiot, Roger Godchaux and Georges Guyot at the Susse gallery on boulevard de la Madeleine. The same year, he exhibited at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, then had twenty-nine of his works published by Susse during the interwar period, and sixteen more by Les Neveux de J. Lehmann. His consecration came when he was declared hors-concours at the 1932 Salon.

Bitter took part in the 1937 Exposition Internationale des Arts et des Techniques in Paris, where he exhibited glassware, chamotte stoneware, in the company of Bouraine at the Palais de la Céramique, and Héraklès, a bronze, at the Palais du Métal, in the company of Guyot, Guino and Fiot.

In 1939, he is commissioned by the FNAC to create three small bronze gargoyles for the water outlets in the base of a monumental fountain in Pithiviers.

Two of his sculptures (Le soleil et la mer and Le monde et l'énergie, also known as Les Deux lions) adorn the monumental staircase of the Marseille-Saint-Charles railway station.

According to Édouard-Joseph, the Musée du Luxembourg once owned a stone statue of Diana by him. The work appears to be lost today, but the Musée de la Piscine in Roubaix owns a Diane Chasseresse that may correspond to this statue.

Ary Bitter was named Chevalier de l'Ordre National de la Légion d'Honneur by decree of July 13, 1932.
