Elias ROBERT 1811 / 1874
Elias Robert, pseudonym of Louis-Valentin Robert, was a French sculptor born in Étampes on June 6, 1821, and died on April 29, 1874, in Paris.
Louis-Valentin Robert was the son of Claude Valentin Robert, a coppersmith, and Marie Rose Jacquemard.
Admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he studied under David d'Angers and James Pradier. He debuted at the Salon of 1845 and won a gold medal in 1847.
He executed numerous commissions in Paris, including for:
- the Louvre Palace (statues of Jacques Cœur (1857), Industry (1857), Science, Rabelais (1857), Music (1857), Caryatids (1857), Phryne (1860), the Tour d'Auvergne, the Opéra Garnier (caryatids),
- the Palais de l'Industrie (pediment "France Crowning Industry and the Arts" (1855), later moved to the Parc de Saint-Cloud),
- the École des Mines de Paris (pediment),
- the Gare d'Austerlitz (statues of Agriculture and Industry),
- the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (statues of Art and Science in 1851, stair ceiling decoration (1860-1861)). Statues by Olivier de Serres and Jacques Vaucanson (1862-1864),
- the École des Beaux-Arts (medallion of the architect Blouet),
- the Magasins Réunis department store, Place de la République (caryatids of Commerce and Industry),
- the Saint-Michel fountain (statue of Justice),
- the Commercial Court (statue of Law), the Théâtre du Châtelet (statue of Drama),
- the Théâtre de la Ville, Place du Châtelet (medallions of Musical Composition and Musical Performance).
- At the Montparnasse Cemetery: a bronze medallion for the tomb of Madame Delafontaine and a bronze bust of Dr. Vigla.
He also created, both in the provinces and abroad, a statue of the Count of Persigny for the city of Roanne in 1852, and portraits of Generals Pajol and Bailly for the city of Versailles in 1853, a marble bust of Admiral Blanquet du Chayla, commissioned by the Minister of State for the galleries of Versailles (1858), a marble bust of Charles Bonaparte, father of Emperor Napoleon I, for the Palace of Versailles (1859), a Monument to Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire in Étampes, inaugurated on October 11, 1857, caryatids for the theater in Étampes and possibly a statue of the nymph Louette, the Monument to Marshal Jourdan, inaugurated on September 30, 1860, in Limoges, statues for the former Orléans train station (Cour du Départ, in 1868), three stone figures forming Christ in Majesty between two saints for the façade of the church of Saint-Germain-lès-Corbeil, the Monument to Pedro IV in Lisbon, and four groups of caryatids for the façade of The Academy of Music in Philadelphia in 1857.
He married Julie Rebecca Legrand (born November 3, 1837, in Paris, 2nd arrondissement) on April 15, 1926, in Paris, 8th arrondissement.
He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor by Imperial Decree No. 7134 of March 15, 1858.
Élias Robert died of heart disease on April 29, 1874, at his home at 154 rue de la Tour in Paris.
In November 1874, his widow donated the works remaining in her husband's studio to the city of Étampes, thus contributing to the creation of the city's museum. Among the works preserved in this museum are a bust of Charles Thoret, a bust of a man as Hermes, a medallion of Alexander von Humboldt, high reliefs bearing the arms of the city of Étampes, and a Bust of Louis Delaunay, a statuette of Marshal Moncey (likely used in the project submitted to the City of Paris in 1864 and rejected), an allegorical group depicting the defense of Paris, a bust of Madame Edouard Hervé, a bust of Aimé Darblay, a bust of Amédée de Viart, an equestrian statue of Joan of Arc, a bust of Jean-Léon Gérôme, a bas-relief of a battle scene for a monument to be erected in Peru, and a collection of plaster sculptures.
There is a Rue Elias Robert in Étampes named in his honor.
