Robert Four Aubusson Tapestry – “bestiary” – After A 15th Century Model – Circa 1960–1980

Artist: Aubusson (robert Four)

Important decorative tapestry produced by the Robert Four manufactory, Paris – Aubusson, during the second half of the 20th century, after a model inspired by late medieval European tapestries dating from the 15th century.

Entitled Bestiary, this richly composed scene reflects the traditional “millefleurs” aesthetic, combining an abundant animal repertoire—featuring peacocks, water birds, and stylized fauna—with a structured landscape unfolding in successive planes. In the background, an idealized architectural setting evokes a medieval town, enhancing the narrative depth of the composition. The peacock, a recurring motif, traditionally symbolizes immortality and renewal in medieval iconography, adding a symbolic dimension to the decorative appeal.

The Robert Four manufactory is renowned for its high-quality reinterpretations of historical Aubusson tapestries, faithfully translating traditional designs through carefully controlled modern techniques. This piece has been executed using a silkscreen process on a wool-based woven ground, allowing for a precise rendering of colors and ornamental richness while preserving the visual and tactile qualities of traditional tapestry.

The original label on the reverse, well preserved, confirms the Aubusson – Paris production and identifies the work as a reproduction after an antique tapestry, ensuring its French origin and quality craftsmanship.

With its generous dimensions, strong decorative presence, and excellent state of preservation, this tapestry is a striking statement piece, ideally suited for both classic and contemporary interiors seeking historical character and refined ambiance.
