Trumeau Directoire – Early Empire (1795–1810) Gallant Scene
A Gallant Scene – Oil on canvas & mercury glass 100 x 78 cm. Magnificent Directoire/early Empire period trumeau, circa 1795–1810, composed of an oil on canvas in the upper section and its original mercury glass in the lower section. The upper section depicts a gallant scene in a woodland setting: a couple in Empire style (high-waisted dress, frock coat, cravat, 1800–1810), observed from a distance by a young woman. The original canvas displays a beautiful, even, antique craquelure, typical of the early decades of the 19th century. In the lower section, the original mercury glass is pitted and slightly darkened, attesting to its authenticity and the charm of antique glass. The giltwood frame with beadwork, featuring clean, straight lines, is characteristic of the Directoire/Empire period. Total height: 100 cm Width: 78 cm Mirror only: 36 cm x 78 cm Antique gallant painting with stable craquelure Original gilding, period patina Authentic mercury glass, pitted and blackened Homogeneous and decorative ensemble Directoire – early Empire (1795–1810) Oil on canvas – Gilt wood – Mercury glass
