Christ Carved Wood Germany Around 1500
Christ appears calm and compact, with gentle expressions. The angular, mobile style that reigned in Nuremberg at the time already knew how to play with the contrasts between the floating perizonium and the body, the whole imbued with a peaceful, fragile grace. Face, hands, bare feet, exuberant curls of beard and hair are chiseled with extreme care. The belly is hollow, delineated by the lower part of the rib cage, the legs are slender and the phalanges of the toes can be seen in relief. The perizonium is double-fall with voluminous, undulating folds. This sculpture has never been polychromed.
