Edouard Chimot . Etching On Japon For Parallelement By Verlaine
Artist: Edouard Chimot
Parallèlement is a collection of forty-five erotic poems published by Verlaine in 1894.
Editions Devambez, a prestigious Parisian publisher, asked Édouard Chimot in 1931 to illustrate this sulphurous collection for a limited edition of 213 copies, including 15 reserved copies on Japon paper.
The print we present here is printed on Japon, unsigned, perhaps a trial run.
Edouard Chimot ( 1880- 1959 ) was an illustrator trained by Pharaon de Winter and Alexis Mossa.
Arrived in Paris, he made his mark in the 1920s, exhibiting and editing some thirty works for Editions Dewanbez.
In his youth, he maintained a friendly correspondence with Baron Jacques de Fersen, a Swedish dandy exiled to Capri after a scandal, and publisher of the first homosexual magazine in France before the 1914 war.
As a habitué of Montmartre, he knew its diverse populations well.
While he celebrated women in most of his works, he also remained an illustrator of the unspoken, the forbidden.
This is shown in this engraving illustrating a poem by Verlaine, or Pan's apprenticeship of a young teenager should not be limited to the flute...
Beautiful print on Japon, a few freckles.
Elegantly framed in a wide art deco oak rod.
