Small black lacquer-covered wooden cabinet with 4 drawers. Bronze handles and rings. Decorated with birds and plants in mother-of-pearl. The cabinet is almost cubic in shape. Early Korean lacquerware is very rare. The Seoul Museum holds a few lacquers, including a pillow with duck decoration identical to the one on our cabinet (bottom right-hand drawer). It is difficult to date this style of lacquer, as the Choson dynasty reigned for 600 years from the 14th century.
Usage wear, cracks, chips, knocks but despite all this abuse, no mother-of-pearl pattern is missing, which proves the exceptional solidity of the lacquer due to the perfect mastery of the Korean lacquerers of this period.
