A LACQUERED DISPLAY SHELF SET (Meiji period (1868-1912)), late 19th century. Constructed of lacquered wood, this set comprises four drawers, a hinged-door cabinet, and a sliding-door cabinet. It is decorated with gold, silver, and red hiramaki-e and takamaki-e motifs, as well as hirame and nashiji designs on a black background, with floral medallions and scattered maple leaves. The sliding doors are decorated with scenes from The Tale of Genji. The hinged doors are lacquered to imitate woven bamboo. The interior is adorned with gold nashiji and silver-plated metal fittings. 30 x 31.5 x 16 cm
