Ancient Coptic textile fragment - Christian Egypt - 3rd-6th century - archaeology

Charming fragment of ancient Coptic textile, from Egypt, entirely woven and decorated with geometric motifs in black and green on a warm orange background.

This type of fragment comes from Coptic funerary contexts of the Christian era, where the deceased were buried dressed, wrapped in several layers of textiles (tunics, cloaks, shrouds). Egypt's extremely arid climate enabled remarkable conservation of these fabrics, today precious testimonies to ancient textile arts.

.

Most of these fragments come from major 19th-century discoveries at major sites such as Antinoe, Akhmîm or Panopolis, and were often cut up at the time to supply European collections.

The example presented here comes from an old London collection, adding to its historical interest and provenance.

Dimensions: 10 x 11 cm.

A beautiful testament to the textile art of Christian Egypt, both decorative and steeped in history.
