Loot With Military Trophies
Artist: Rosso Genovese (anversa, 1591 - Genova, 1638)
Federico Zeri identifies this Rosso Genovese as Jan Roos, an Antwerp painter who lived and painted important still lifes in Genoa for a time. The attribution is based on a seminal article by Zeri in which he reconstructs the artist's corpus of four homogeneous paintings with loot scenes: one in the Colonna collection in Rome, one in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and two others in a private collection (see Zeri 1988, pp. 1-4). The painting, as can be clearly seen, compares with a series of details in these paintings: the colorful assemblage of objects in the foreground, all executed with rare descriptive lucidity, be they weapons, armor, a vase, or a fabric.
Photos of the painting in the Colonna collection and the painting in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam are included for comparison.
