Gouache By Saverio Della Gatta Depicting A View Of The Royal Palace Of Caserta
Artist: Saverio Della Gatta (lecce, 1758-1828)
A panoramic “bird’s-eye view” of the Royal Palace of Caserta, a perspective favored by Neapolitan landscape painters of the late 18th century. On the left stands the imposing Royal Palace with its long façade, surrounded by the park and English-style gardens, whose winding paths and flowerbeds are visible. In the background, the Apennine mountain range slopes downward to the right, where a hillside settlement with buildings and ruins can be seen. In the foreground, a few saplings swaying in the wind and two figures in 18th-century costume—a man with a hat and cane and a woman in a white dress—bring the scene to life, in keeping with the customary repertoire of “macchiette” typical of Della Gatta’s work. Signed in the lower right corner and dated.
