Family tradition attributed this painting to Théodore Gudin, which was confirmed by fading it and finding the signature in the lower left.
The former owners, great collectors possessed among other things a small collection of marine including this drawing by Gudin. They wrote on the back: "Théodore Gudin,c'est peut-être le tableau qui a le plus de valeur de notre modeste collection de marines."
