Beppe Ciardi, son of the well-known Guglielmo, was one of the leading figures of early twentieth-century Venetian painting, heir to a vedutistic tradition that he reinterpreted in a tonalist and Impressionist key. The three small panels brought together in a single frame document his habitual practice of studies from life, executed en plein air across different years. The first panel depicts the Riva degli Schiavoni with figures along the waterfront and the open lagoon in the background; the second shows a view of the Grand Canal with palaces reflected in the water; the third portrays a twilight scene with a group of figures in the foreground and the city's silhouette dissolving into the lagoon haze. The brushwork is loose yet constructive, with rapid touches of colour recalling the Venetian macchia tradition, while the luministic atmosphere — grey veils of sky, broken light on walls and costumes — reveals the tonal sensibility that characterises his mature production.
