André Fremond (1884-1965) - "the Buffaloes"
Artist: André Fremond (1884-1965)
"The Buffaloes" or "Memories of Macedonia" Large oil on canvas Signed lower left "André Frémond" and dated 1938 Dimensions: 91 x 151 cm This work is structured horizontally, bathed in a warm, crepuscular light. Two dark and massive water buffaloes occupy the left side of the painting. On the right, an elderly man, the guardian, sits on a tree trunk. He wears a turban and colorful clothing. In the background, a village is depicted with houses having white and light-colored walls and tiled roofs. Cypress trees dot the horizon, typical of Mediterranean landscapes. The color palette is dominated by the warm tones of terracotta, sand, and red ochre, which contrast with the black of the buffaloes' coats and the bright colors of the herdsman's costume.
