Carved wood structure, lacquered and polychrome painted, with a top painted in faux black marble with gold veining. Serpentine front with three drawers fitted with burnished bronze handles and escutcheons, raised on cabriole legs ending in deer-hoof feet.

A remarkable pair of commodes attributable to the finest tradition of 18th-century Sicilian cabinet-making, distinguished by a decorative programme of considerable quality. The surfaces, entirely covered in lacquer on a vermilion red ground, are animated by gilded relief pastiglia ornament framing shaped cartouches painted with polychrome floral compositions including flowers, fruit and birds. The same decorative vocabulary extends to the sides, lending coherence to the overall design. The top is painted in faux black marble with gold veining. This type of polychrome lacquer work, with its Rococo-derived ornamental schemes filtered through Mediterranean sensibility and Bourbon influence, is among the most distinctive expressions of 18th-century Sicilian manufacture.
