Kilim Qashqai - Persia. Circa 1920. 300 X 165 Cm
Magnificent, uncluttered and perfectly balanced, Qashqai kilim from Persia, southwest Iran. Its composition and classical tribal symbolic vocabulary give an instant reading of this piece. More graphic and, above all, less formal than medallion kilims, its organization is based on a succession of horizontal bands with varied motifs.
Let's take a look at the wide bands with no apparent motif. These are not empty spaces. On the contrary, these spaces contain the 2 main elements. Coral red evokes the Earth and indigo blue, the Sky. Delicate Abrash patterns create undulating movements in the form of different tones around the same color.
Most of the motifs here fall into the large family of protection motifs. The Eye against the Evil Eye is integrated into lozenges. The large garden in the central field is also protected by an uninterrupted alignment of chain-like motifs, evoking both continuity and peripheral protection.
The visual energy is at once powerful, controlled and totally free. It's typical of early Namad Qashqai production. Like a signature.
The hues are exclusively vegetal, dense, sometimes saturated, yet there's a certain softness to the whole, like a light breath in perfect harmony. Enthusiasts and other collectors will fully appreciate the presence of a bottle-green hue, a green tending towards yellow. This hue has completely disappeared over the last century. It's a blend of indigo blue and yellow.
Masterfully woven wool on wool. The weaving matches the aesthetics.
