Battle-damaged Imperial German Jager Shako
Prussian Jager shako model 1860, non-commissioned officer. A moving piece with a visible bullet hole in the lower right of the cap, with a much larger exit hole directly opposite. Larger than the modified 1896 model, with no side vents. Black leather skullcap with Prussian eagle plaque attached to the front and removable state cockade mounted above. Original thick leather chinstrap. Small 1 cm hole at front, with a tear in the leather just above. At the rear, a large hole of approx. 5 cm is surrounded by tears. The inner leather lining retains its wear marks similar to those on the skullcap. The lining and cap also show stains in this area. Cotton label applied to the cap: "Jäger Jäger IV Comp", together with the unit stamp "J.B 10". Discreet equipment markings on the rear visor. A magnificent and poignant example of German imperial headgear.
Note -
The Hanover Jager Battalion No. 10, 4th Company, took part in numerous battles during the First World War, a period in which losses were most severe. Involved from the outset in campaigns such as the Battle of the Marne, with battles at Béthancourt, Flanders, Zandvoorde and Warneton, they were also present during the Christmas truce of 1914. They then fought on the Italian front and during the Serbian campaign, before reaching Verdun, where they received the Stelhelm helmet.
