A 30-hour brass miniature hoop and spike type lantern timepiece with alarm, first half of the 18th century and later, the arched brass dial signed 'Avenell, London' to the arch, engraved with foliate floral design, rose design alarm dial and silvered chapter ring, on ball feet, the verge escapement with short bob pendulum and striking on a bell, 22 cm high
Notes: Records of 18th-century London clockmakers named “Avenell” working in the first half of the eighteenth century, include: Avenell, Edward, Clockmakers’ Company, 1706-49, Beadle of Clockmakers’Company; and Avenell, John, London, 1735-56, Beadle of Clockmakers‘ Company (Son of Edward).

As such, it should be assumed that the clock is not working and requires attention, has been altered with later restorations and replacement of the components of the movement. There is a component loose inside the clock that looks like a double pawl - please see in our images. No weights are present.
Provenance: From the estate of the late William John Thornton (1937-2025), of Groby, Leicestershire, an active member of the Antiquarian Horological Society who gave several lectures to its members at Keble College, Oxford University.
