1917 Birmingham Sterling Silver Cigarette Case Enamel Horse Panel
A fineBritish sterling silver cigarette case, hallmarked Birmingham 1917, with abeautifully painted original enamel panel depicting a galloping bay horse in anEnglish country landscape. The horse is confidently rendered, with excellentmovement, strong anatomy, and a real sense of energy, while the soft pastoralbackground gives the enamel the quality of a miniature painting. The case ismade in the classic cut-cornered rectangular form and has a smart engine-turnedreverse with a gilt interior. It is a substantial example at 229.56 grams andis large enough to serve equally well as a cigarette case or card case.A key pointis that the enamel is original to the case and not a later decorativeconversion. The panel is correctly set and flush within the silver frame, withno signs of later mounting, soldering, or alteration. UV examination showed nofluorescence associated with later repairs or modern restoration materials.Conditionis excellent. The enamel has no cracks or chips, the colours remain bright, thesilver has no dents or distortion, the gilded interior is very well preserved, and the clasp closes firmly.A rare anddecorative wartime British silver case with a highly appealing equestriansubject.Dimensions:143 × 85 mmThickness: 11 mmWeight: 229.56 gPleasestudy the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part ofthis description.
