Carpet - Khorjin. Bathiyari. Persian. Circa 1880. 102 X 90 Cm
An extraordinary Khorjin Bathiyari from Persia. Many aspects are noteworthy. The size, this compact format of 102 x 90 cm, is quite surprising. Usually, this type of piece is found in more modest dimensions, around 50 x 60 cm. The mixed technique is employed, with the lower section, about thirty centimeters high, worked in knotted stitch and the other surface in the Sumak technique. The motifs feature dragons in their cage, enclosed by barriers. The colors are beautifully soft and in perfect harmony. The state of preservation is impeccable, almost miraculous. Khorjin are wonderful everyday objects once used by nomadic populations throughout Persia. The Sumak technique is similar to embroidery. It requires the use of a second weft thread to create all the surface patterns. From the perspective of the enthusiast or collector, this delightful, original, and antique piece ticks all the boxes!
