RUSSIAN ART
L ate 18th or early 19th century Orthodox icon ,
Provincial Workshop or Voronezh School (Central Russia)

This icon, horizontal format, shows two holy figures side by side, surmounted by fine gold inscriptions in Syrillic/Russian.

*For the figure on the right, one reads: "Святитель Митрофанъ епископъ Воронежский" meaning Saint Mitrophan, Bishop of Voronezh.
Святитель = Holy Hierarch (title reserved for bishops) епископъ = Bishop of Voronezh = of Voronezh This clearly identifies Saint Mitrophane of Voronezh, one of the most revered bishops of Imperial Russia. Saint Mitrophane of Voronezh (17th century) is extremely popular in Russia's central provinces, indicating a very likely origin in the Voronezh region, or a workshop linked to central Russia (Tambov, Moscow, Ryazan).

* For the figure on the left, the inscription appears to be: "Святый Иеросхимонахъ Макарий" or Saint Hieromonk Macarius (probably Macarius of Altai or Macarius of Unzha, depending on the iconography). Priest-martyr: this title is borne by several Russian saints, but in iconography, it most often corresponds to Saint Macarius of Kanev (†1678), a hieromonk martyred by the Tatars. Iconographically, he is often depicted, as here, in Bishop.

These two saints are usually associated in Russian icons late 18th or early 19th century, often produced in provincial workshops. Local provincial icons also frequently depicted regional patron saints.

The wooden panel shows a patina and a network of cracks consistent with a production date of approximately 200 years.
The wood assembly (horizontal plank visible) also corresponds to common practices.
Note a joint in the center of the wooden panel, at the level of the face of the figure on the right; this is not a restoration but rather an original technique, certainly to correct a knot in the wood that could have hindered the precision of the painting of the portrait and face.
