Imola (Emilia-Romagna), 18th century
Soup tureen
Polychrome majolica, h 24 × 34 × 22 cm

An elegant majolica soup tureen from the Imola workshop, dating from the 18th century, characterised by an oval, pod-shaped body resting on a flared foot, with shaped side handles and a shaped lid featuring a handle modelled in the shape of a pumpkin.
The surface is coated in white tin-glaze and decorated in polychrome with naturalistic motifs: compositions of fruit (pears and bunches of grapes) and plant racemes, arranged symmetrically across the body and lid. The decorative repertoire, lively yet balanced, is part of the late 18th-century Emilian tradition, influenced by the ‘bouquet’ style and the production of Faenza and Imola.
The undulating form and the sculptural modelling of the handles and lid recall models widespread in northern Italy during the second half of the 18th century.
Majolica is a ceramic coated with a matt white tin-based glaze, which allows for bright and defined pictorial decoration.
In 18th-century Italy, production focused both on ‘ceremonial’ objects intended for display and on everyday items, though these were nonetheless decorated with refined taste and floral or naturalistic motifs.
Imola, together with Faenza, was one of the main centres of ceramics in northern Italy. In the 18th century, it developed a vibrant production, characterised by polychrome decorations with floral and naturalistic themes, often of a spontaneous style but highly effective decoratively, intended both for the local market and for wider commercial distribution.
The soup tureen was a central element of the tableware set, intended for the presentation and serving of soups and liquid dishes. In the 18th-century context, it also had a representative function: it was displayed during banquets as a sign of decorum and status, contributing to the table’s overall aesthetic presentation.
The soup tureen examined here stands out as an example of pleasing decorative quality and a type representative of 18th-century Imola production, now sought after for its authentic character and for its historical and documentary value linked to Emilian ceramics.
Good overall condition, with normal signs of use and ageing consistent with the period (small chips and slight wear to the glaze).
