Pharmacopoeia:
The inscription "ONG. AEGYPTIAC. " is one of the most classic of ancient pharmacy,
present on many earthenware pots of the 17th and 18th centuries.
"Ong. Aegyptiac" means: Egyptian Ointment.
Egyptian ointment (Unguentum Aegyptiacum) was a powerful disinfectant and detergent,
used for the treatment of infected wounds, ulcers and skin necrosis.
It was one of the most renowned ointments of the medieval and Renaissance pharmacopoeia,
mentioned in many antidotaries and pharmaceutical codices.
Composition: Honey, Vinegar, Copper sulfate, Flour or gum arabic.
This preparation gave a brownish-green ointment, with a strong odor,
applied to wounds or ulcers to "remove the dead flesh" before healing.
Height: 22 cm.
Condition: Used. One crack at the neck (see photos).
