Nicolas-Alexandre Folin, known as the Elder, was one of the most important Parisian clockmakers of the last quarter of the 18th century and the early years of the following century. Initially established as a journeyman, he became a master craftsman in 1789 and set up his own workshop on Rue Salle-au-Comte. He immediately achieved great renown and specialized in the creation of skeleton clock models. Particularly active after the fall of Louis XVI and under the Empire, he surrounded himself, for the development of the cases and dials of his clocks, with the best craftsmen of the time, notably the enameller Merlet, the engravers Martincourt and Vion, and the cabinetmaker Schwerdfeger.
