Bronze box depicting "The Hunts of Ashurbanipal, Nineveh, circa 650 BC"
L 16 cm / W 9.5 cm / H 5 cm.

The Hunts of Ashurbanipal are a series of bas-reliefs from the royal palace of Nineveh, created during the reign of the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal. Sculpted around 650 BC, these spectacular scenes depict lion hunts, symbols of power and royal authority. Highly realistic, they testify to the artistic refinement of Assyrian civilization and its ability to represent movement, tension, and violence with remarkable precision.

Max Le Verrier (1891–1973) was a French sculptor and designer emblematic of Art Deco. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, he specialized in decorative objects in bronze and spelter, notably sculptures, lamps, and desk accessories. His work is distinguished by elegant lines, stylized figures and a sense of movement, characteristic of the aesthetics of the 1920s-1930s.
