The Concarneau School refers to a colony of artists that developed in Concarneau from the late 19th century. Attracted by the very particular light of the Breton coast, the life of the port, and the seascapes, these painters formed a movement characterized by: realistic painting, often close to ethnography; a strong focus on fishing scenes, sailors, and the daily lives of the inhabitants; and compositions bathed in a changing, atmospheric light.
This movement is part of the tradition of regional artistic colonies, where observation of the environment and sensitivity to nature take precedence.
