18th Baroque Limewood Germany Sculpture Saint John Of Nepomuk
Baroque limewood sculpture depicting Saint John of Nepomuk, Southern Germany, 18th century.
John (Jan) of Nepomuk, or of Nepomuk (Nepomuk, before 1345 – Prague, March 20, 1393), was a Czech priest, canon of Prague Cathedral, and preacher at the court of King Wenceslas, who had him drowned. Sainted by Pope Benedict XIII in 1729, he is the patron saint of Bohemia, of confessors, and of all those in danger of drowning. The veneration of Saint John of Nepomuk is widespread in various European countries, particularly the Czech Republic and Germany. Many works of art have been dedicated to him, most notably the magnificent silver tomb erected in his honor in Prague inside the Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral and, also in Prague, the statue on Charles Bridge, where many devotees caress the base depicting his martyrdom for good luck. Also worthy of mention is the church in the heart of Munich dedicated to him, a true masterpiece of Rococo art.
Our statue offers a vividly realistic interpretation, with his bare head, gaunt, thin face, and outstretched arms, typical of German sculpture of the period. Fallen to his knees, he rests on a cloud supported by cherubs. Excellent condition.
