Boulle Marquetry Jardinière, Napoleon III Period – Mid-19th Century

This Boulle marquetry jardinière, crafted during the Second Empire in the mid-19th century, boasts a dynamic silhouette and a rich decorative style emblematic of the Napoleon III era. Its inverted cavetto top is accentuated by a bronze molding that highlights its lines and showcases the chased bronze mounts at each corner. The top is surrounded by an openwork brass gallery and fitted with bronze foliate handles that add both elegance and functionality. The harmoniously curved apron is adorned with brass and tortoiseshell marquetry in the purest Boulle tradition, where arabesques and plant motifs stand out brilliantly against the glowing red background. The interior of the jardinière contains a black sheet metal tray, designed to hold plants or floral arrangements while protecting the exterior marquetry. It could also be used for storage. The base, composed of cabriole legs, extends the flowing lines of the apron. Each foot is decorated with acanthus leaf motifs that continue as a chiseled molding following the curve, culminating in a bronze sabot adorned with scrolls.
