Pendulum, The Oath Of The Horatii, Empire Period.

A large Empire period clock in gilt and patinated bronze, illustrating a famous episode from Roman history, popularized by Jacques-Louis David's 1785 painting: The Oath of the Horatii.
The three Horatii brothers stand with outstretched arms, swearing an oath to conquer or die for Rome. Opposite them stands their father, holding the three swords toward which his sons extend their hands. This theme, representing patriotism, sacrifice, and civic virtue, recounts the combat of three Roman champions, the Horatii, against the three champions of Alba Longa, the Curiatii.
A duel necessary to end a bloody war.

This clock immortalizes the scene where the three Horatii take their oath before going into battle. Only one Horatii returns alive from this battle.
The white enamel dial with Roman numerals is set within a central pedestal surmounted by three laurel wreaths in the round and decorated with a garland of flowers and foliage in gilt bronze. The signature "Courvoisier à Paris" remains, for Louis Courvoisier (1758-1832), a renowned Parisian watchmaker active from 1781 to 1830.

Originally suspended by a wire, the movement has been modified to include a lever escapement.
On the base, the bas-relief features a gilt bronze frieze depicting the battle between the Horatii and the Curiatii, taking place before the walls of the Roman city. The whole rests on four winged lion's paw feet.

In good condition, uncleaned.
