End Of IV Bc - Bell Crater - Apulian Workshop (greater Greece)
Artist: Atelier Apulien (grande Grèce)
A very rare, large red-figure bell krater (H: 29.3 cm). Magna Graecia. This krater comes from an Apulian workshop dating to the late 4th century BC (authenticated by D. Lebeurrier, archaeological expert). On the first side, a standing woman presents a large platter to Eros Thanatos, who is seated on rocks and holds a mirror and a tambourine. The other side depicts two beardless men standing opposite each other. Radiating palmettes are painted beneath the handles. The scene is framed by a band of laurel leaves and a band of meanders. This ancient artifact shows old restorations which in no way alter the finesse of the motifs. It should be compared with the krater (-430 / -420 BC) in the Department of Antiquities at the Louvre (accession number: CA 307, catalogue number: G 496).
