Long Combat Or Dueling Sword, Known As A Brette, 17th Century
A sword described as a "breastsword" for a swordsman, which speaks volumes about its use.
Wrought iron hilt with a grooved, ovoid pommel. The knuckle guard is striated with two scrolled quillons (repaired).
The large, 16 cm diameter shell guard is floral with an openwork crosshatching design (some parts missing and worn).
The iron wire grip has two braided rings. The wire section is 10 cm long.
The long blade is 97.5 cm long with a small fuller stamped "IHS" on both sides, a flat section, and a central ridge. The ricasso is 2.5 cm wide.
The overall length is 120 cm.
