Marcel Vertès, Paravent, Cabaret Dressing Room Screen, Naked Woman And Small Dogs

Artist: Marcel Vertès ( 1895-1961)
A very rare undulating folding screen depicting a young woman with her three small dogs. Created by Marcel Vertès, it bears the artist's signature in the upper left corner. This screen was made for the backstage area of a cabaret show. It is constructed from a mixed-material panel with a zinc core, giving it its undulating shape. The entire piece rests on a similarly undulating base covered in pale mauve velvet. We note some minor paint losses and cracks, a few small imperfections along the edges, especially at the top (see photos), and some slight wear and discoloration of the velvet. All of this is normal given the use and age of this object. Marcel Vertès, born on August 10, 1895 in Hungary and died on October 31, 1961 in Paris. Painter, engraver, illustrator and costume and set designer for film. He studied in Paris at the Académie Julian. He became known in France from the 1920s onwards, particularly for his lithographs and illustrations. His favorite subjects were the circus, balls, brothels, cabarets, etc. He achieved fame with the release of his album of lithographs entitled "Dancings," and illustrated Colette's "Chéri" and "Vagabonde." In the 1930s, he worked for fashion magazines such as the British edition of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, etc. A watercolorist and costume designer, he also collaborated on numerous advertising campaigns for luxury perfumes and created fabrics. In the early 1950s, he enjoyed great renown in artistic circles, justified by his exceptional talent. He participated in John Huston's film Moulin Rouge as costume designer and set decorator, for which he received two Oscars.
