A Six-panel Folding Screen On Paper With Gold Dust Depicting A Majestic Peacock
A six-panel folding screen painted on paper with gold dust, depicting a peacock beside the trunk of a pine tree (matsu). The bird is shown in profile, with its body partially concealed by the tree trunk; the plumage is rendered with great chromatic attention.
The screen is signed and dated in the lower section: “Painted by Ganryō, known as Gagakuke, in the first spring of the year Kōka 5 (1848).” The signature and seals confirm the attribution to Kishi Ganryō (1798–1852), a painter active in Kyoto in the late Edo period.
Period: Edo, dated 1848.
Dimensions: 170 × 370 cm.
Condition: The screen is in good condition. Two internal hinges show signs of wear between the fifth and sixth panels; the screen opens and closes correctly. The silk border shows some stains, light retouching, and traces of humidity. The lacquered frame shows signs of use. The paper on the reverse has been reinforced.
