Maurice Felbier, 1903-1991, painter and wood sculptor born in Antwerp. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (1919-1922) and at the NHISKA (National Art Institute of Antwerp) under Issidore Opsomer and Eduard Pellens (1923-1930). He evolved from the heavy brushstrokes of his teacher Opsomer to an Impressionist sensitivity to light. His paintings include still lifes, female nudes, and religious works. He idealized his subjects. The slender figures and silhouettes are reminiscent of the Florentine painters of the Quattrocento. He favored large formats, and his compositions are mostly Symbolist works with a strong literary character. He was a member of the 't Getij Circle and taught at the Antwerp Academy from 1950 to 1968. His works are in the Museums of Antwerp and Ghent. He is listed in the Bénézit, Arto, and Piron dictionaries. Listed on Artprice, Artnet, Akoun, etc...
