Large Venetian Moretto Figure Carrying A Tray, Polychrome Wood, Venice, Late 19th Century
Large decorative Venetian Blackamoor figure holding a tray, carved and polychrome wood. The sculpture depicts an oriental figure dressed in a richly decorated costume and wearing a turban adorned with a stylized feather. He holds a tray in front of him, originally intended as a trinket dish or cup holder in a hall or reception room.
Such figures, known as Venetian “Blackamoor” or “Moretto”, were highly appreciated in European interiors during the late 19th century, particularly in Venice, where they were produced for palaces, hotels and bourgeois residences.
Its generous height and stable base suggest that it was conceived as both a decorative and functional piece.
