Large Antique-style Bowl With Serpents, Alabaster, Grand Tour, 19th Century
Large and beautiful antique-style carved alabaster cup. A truly spectacular piece with side handles in the form of intertwined serpents. Inspired by the basins of ancient Rome, this striking footed cup represents a remarkable technical feat, the intricately carved serpents being sculpted from a single block of alabaster along with the circular body of the cup. Rare to find in its generous dimensions and especially in such excellent condition (no breaks or repairs to the serpents' bodies!). Presented on its square (and removable) base in the same alabaster, fixed to a gray marble pedestal. Certainly an Italian work, still faithful to the Grand Tour tradition, circa 1880.
