Guillaume Georges Roger (1867 - 1943) View At Twilight Of The Port Of Saint Mandrier, Signed Oil
Artist: Guillaume Georges Roger ( 1867-1943)
Guillaume Georges Roger
Paris 1867-1943
View of the Port of Saint-Mandrier at Dusk (Mediterranean)
Oil on canvas
Signed lower left G. Roger
Annotated "twilight" on the reverse of the stretcher
38 x 55 cm
Excellent condition
Painter, pastelist, and poster artist, Guillaume Roger began his career in 1892. He was a student of the painter Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904).
After a rather academic start to his career, the discovery of the light of the South and the influence of Fauvism drastically altered his palette and his way of painting. This painting is a fine example of his Mediterranean period, during which he seems to have painted numerous port views, some of which are featured in these posters (see photo).
In 1916, a work by the artist was acquired by the Petit Palais Museum; it was presented at the exhibition "The Art of Pastel from Degas" in Redon (September-April 2017). The Bonnat-Helleu museum in Bayonne has exhibited several of his paintings.
