Boats After The Storm. François Gautier.
Artist: François Gautier ( 1842 - 1917 )
François Gautier studied at a Jesuit college before entering the Marseille School of Fine Arts, where he won medals. There he associated with masters such as Emile Loubon, Jean-Baptiste Olive, and Adolphe Monticelli. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1866 to 1870, but the war brought this to an end. He was appointed official painter of the French Navy in 1910. A friend of the patron and collector Jules Cantini (for whom a Marseille museum is named), he devoted his entire life to painting. His preferred subjects were seascapes, which he painted from the shore or directly from his boat, as well as landscapes of Provence in the countryside around Aix-en-Provence and near Gardanne, where he lived.
