"Oil On Canvas From The Romantic School Circa 1830 Depicting A Monastery With Monks."
Oil on canvas from the Romantic School circa 1820 depicting a monastery with monks. Unsigned. Painting with a subject and style characteristic of French Romantic painting in the 1830s with its fascination for medieval ruins, notably the interiors of churches, cloisters, monastic abbeys. The main painters of these subjects at this time were Daguerre, Renoux, Granet and the Count of Forbin. Characteristic of this painting are also the lighting effects worthy of a play, the precise rendering of the architectures which are at the same time embellished in proportions and the anecdotal presence of characters who are there primarily to decorate and animate the scene.
