Artist: Raúl Milián ( 1914 - 1984 )
Raúl Milián Pons. Self-taught Cuban painter. Born in Havana on April 14, 1914.He is said to have started painting in 1950, a decade during which he also worked on decorating ceramic pieces, alongside other artists such as Portocarrero, Lam and Amelia, at the Santiago de las Vegas studio run by Juan Miguel Rodríguez de la Cruz. His models seem to be the artists of Formalism, New Figuration, North American Abstract Expressionism, the painting of Mark Tobey and Mark Rotho, the drawings of Wols and the work of earlier artists such as Henri Michaux, Paul Klee and Jean Dubuffet.Almost all his work is executed in black and colored inks on small-format, usually vertical, paper and cardboard, depicting heads, faces, figures, flowers, vases and abstractions. His images express abstract and philosophical reflections. This work comes from the former collection of His Excellency Hector de Ayala, Cuban ambassador to Paris in the 1950s, collector and great promoter of contemporary Cuban art in France. Exhibited in the Salon de l'Art Libre of the Palais de Beaux Arts, now the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in the 50s.. Under number 40 and titled: "Angustia en Ré mayor ". The format of the work remains exceptional
