The Royal Navy reigned supreme over the oceans throughout the 19th century, ensuring the cohesion and defense of Her Majesty Queen Victoria's empire around the globe. Naval officers, in the grand tradition of the 18th century, carried a saber, which allowed for its use in boarding actions. This characteristic shape, its perfect grip, was ideally suited to this method of combat. The hilt is covered in Galuchat skin, and a lion's head surmounts the whole, its mane running along . Beneath this, tightly enveloping the hilt, is the naval anchor surmounted by a closed crown. The scabbard is in perfect condition with its support rings and decorations; the leather is still supple. The blade appears to bear a rather worn hallmark at the top; it is perfectly preserved, with no dents or extensive rust.
