18th Century: Tankar Or Mug, Ottingen Earthenware With A Pewter Rim
Beer, a familiar beverage in the Rhineland and Nordic countries, has led to the creation of mugs (or tankars) made of all kinds of materials to enjoy this heartwarming drink.
This tankar is made of earthenware and features a pewter lid and base; it is engraved with intertwined initials and the date 1794.
The earthenware and the pretty floral decoration allow us to attribute this tankar to the Ottingen-Schrattenhofen workshop, a famous Bavarian manufacturer specializing in this type of object, founded in 1735 and active until the 19th century.
A “K” monogram on the base may be, as in other workshops, the painter’s mark.
The pewter work is still Baroque in style.
There is a small flaw—which appears to be original—on the neck below the pewter mount; otherwise, the piece is in excellent condition.
