"Thailand Early 20th Century: Painting On Fabric "
Thai culture is a rich melting pot of traditions in very diverse fields. Its refinement is matched only by the delicacy of its customs. A long pictorial tradition which has its source in immemorial times, illustrating the life of the divinities and giving pride of place to dance, which is a sacred act. The painting on fabrics presented here shows on two registers, bare-breasted dancers, and a dancer performing complex figures. The environment is vegetal, the costumes and headdresses enhanced with gold leaf. The painting seems relatively old (probably from the beginning of the 20th century), and was framed in the 1960s (the frame is typical with its border of greige wild silk). It has not been opened since. Minor wear on the painting, but the whole is in very good condition, the colors very fresh. Dimensions at sight; 36.5 cm x 36.5 cm
