Mohamed Bouzid (1929-2014) — Large Double-sided Drawing, 1960 - Portrait And Exhibition Project

Mohamed Bouzid (1929-2014) Large double-sided drawing Charcoal and ink on paper Exhibition proposal dated March 3–16, 1960 59 x 50 cm An important and unusual work by Mohamed Bouzid, created in 1960. The front presents a seated female figure, rendered with a powerful and concise style. The charcoal treatment reveals a remarkable mastery of mass and contrast: broad hatching, deeply charcoal-like areas, and bold highlights. The stylized, almost introspective face reflects a resolutely modern formal approach, where economy of means serves expressive intensity. The back, far from being anecdotal, constitutes a true studio document: a handwritten proposal likely intended for an exhibition poster, mentioning the dates "March 3–16, 1960" as well as the name "bouzid" rendered in pictorial ink. This dual interpretation lends the work a rare historical and documentary dimension. Large format for a drawing (59 x 50 cm), offering a strong visual presence. Good overall condition. Light foxing and signs of age consistent with the work's age. A piece that is both artistic and historical, bearing witness to the artist's creative process. Mohamed Bouzid is an Algerian painter born in 1929 in Lakhdaria (formerly Palestro), who has lived in Paris since 1994. He designed the seal and coat of arms of the Algerian Republic in 1963, following independence. He participated in numerous exhibitions, notably the 1964 exhibition "Algerian Painters" at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. His last major exhibition was a retrospective at the Musée National des Beaux-Arts in Algiers.
