Koch & Bergfeld: 6 Solid Silver Dessert Spoons, Berain Style Putti Decoration, Louis XIV

A superb set of solid silver dessert spoons in the Louis XIV style.

The teardrop-shaped spoons are decorated with a Berain-style motif depicting a putto and foliate arabesques on a matte background. A cascade of coins adorns the stem.
The reverse features the same decoration with a cartouche bearing the monogram "D" in place of the putto.

The Koch & Bergfeld company was founded in 1829 in Bremen, making it one of the oldest silversmiths still operating in Germany. It has supplied royal courts, German embassies, and the UEFA Champions League trophy.

These are very beautiful spoons with this unusual decoration, which was very fashionable during the reign of Louis XIV. The polished finish of the putti and grotesque decoration contrasts beautifully with the satiny appearance of the matte background.
