Francis MORTON-JOHNSON, an American in Paris.
Like many American painters of his generation, Francis Morton-Johnson left his native Massachusetts to perfect his artistic training in Paris. He enrolled at the Académie Julian, where he studied under Jean-Paul Laurens.
He also frequented Adolphe-William Bouguereau, Henri Bouchard, Paul Landowski, Pierre Bonnard, Louise Bourgeois, Maurice Denis, André Derain, Jean Dubuffet, Marcel Duchamp, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Paul Sérusier, Jacques Villon, Edouard Vuillard, Eileen Gray, Kupka, Alphonse Mucha, Félix Valloton, and many others.
He made his debut at the Salon d'Automne in 1907 and joined the Salon des Indépendants the following year, which led to the acquisition of one of his still lifes by the French state. He remained loyal to this event, which brought him good fortune, until the eve of the First World War.
