Jules Noël (1815-1881)
Oil on canvas,
seascape,
38 x 27 cm,

Jules Noël was a French painter born in 1815 and died in 1881. A student of Cherioux in Brest, he came to Paris, made his debut at the Salon of 1840, and continued to exhibit there until 1879. He won a third-class medal in 1853. Jules Noël was a charming artist: his drawings are full of verve, and his watercolors and paintings are executed with a spirited touch. He was particularly successful in depicting the Normandy coast, and in this genre, he follows in the footsteps of Eugène Isabey. His familiar scenes of life in towns, the countryside, and by the sea offer a picturesque and vibrant perspective.
