French School Circa 1870 : Oil On Paper "coastal Landscape"
French School, circa 1870: "Coastal Landscape," oil on paper, approximately 24.3 x 29.5 cm, laid down on cardboard, 25 x 30 cm, mounted in a German gilt frame (minor damage), 30 x 35 cm.
Irregular trim and two small losses at the top, concealed by the rabbet.
Disassembly confirms that this study was painted en plein air, pinned at the corners to a small board.
The firm, almost angular, and remarkably precise brushwork suggests the artist is somewhere between Corot and Jean-Baptiste Olive—a connection worth exploring !
Under a cloudless blue sky, a rocky coast at low tide opens onto a bay, revealing rocks covered in seaweed, while on the opposite shore, a town with its church and a red tower, perhaps a lighthouse, can be seen.
