18th Century English School : "coat Of Arms Of The Duke Of Bournes"
"Coat of Arms of the Dukes of Bourne" 18th century gold-enhanced illumination on watermarked paper 41 X 33 cm, mounted in a superb period carved wooden frame 49 X 42 cm whose gilding has practically disappeared, but whose chiseling and incredible lightness testify to its quality.
Our restorer has removed some water stains and lined it with Japanese paper to guarantee its durability, one of the rebates is partially detached from the frame.
Even if Voltaire in his Candide mocks the science of coats of arms, this, whose origins date back to the High Middle Ages, was the only way to recognize one another, especially on the battlefield.
The works of Pierre Joubert and Michel Pastoureau on the subject will be usefully consulted.
Here are represented the complete coat of arms with shield "sable with a chevron pers argent pale and or accompanied by three griffin heads of the same which is: Bourne", helmet (of course in profile, full face being reserved for the king), ducal crown surmounted by another griffin head biting a flower and lambrequins plus decorative floral motifs.
Ah ! The good old days when the official language was French!
An explanatory text below uses French blazon terms, as also shown in the other 19th century English coat of arms that we are offering for sale.
