The artist, a still-life painter, was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, where this work may have been exhibited, judging by the fragment of a label in the lower left corner.
A student of Gérôme, he also studied with his brother-in-law, Ferdinand Roybet, a specialist in 17th-century-style portraits, in whose studio these accessories were probably painted.
The crested helmet, powder flask, and sword with a "tazza" (a type of sword) resting on a scarlet tablecloth make this work extremely decorative.
